The comparative method is one of the methods of teaching geography .in this method the teaching is based on the comparison of regions. for this process of teaching knowledge of two countries is necessary but while teaching, knowledge of about one region is compared with another region. Through this method, students come to understand the similar and diverse conditions of physical regions or climate regions.  Because of this method small-scale industries and multipurpose industries are compared critically.

In linguistics, the Comparative method is a technique for studying the development of languages by performing a feature-by-feature comparison of two or more languages with common descent from a shared ancestor and then extrapolating backward to infer the properties of that ancestor. The comparative method may be contrasted with the method of internal reconstruction in which the internal development of a single language is inferred by the analysis of features within that language. Ordinarily, both methods are used together to reconstruct prehistoric phases of languages; to fill in gaps in the historical record of a language; to discover the development of phonological, morphological, and other linguistic systems and to confirm or to refute hypothesized relationships between languages.

The comparative method was developed over the 19th century. Key contributions were made by the Danish scholars Rasmus Rask and Karl Verner and the German scholar Jacob Grimm. The first linguist to offer reconstructed forms from a proto-language was August Schleicher, in his Compendium der vergleichenden Grammatik der indogermanischen Sprachen, originally published in 1861.  Here is Schleicher's explanation of why he offered reconstructed forms.

§  Merits of comparative Method

2.      This method is budget friendly / economical method.

3.      This method makes knowledge long lasting.

4.      It is time saving method.

5.      This method improves the knowledge of local geography.

§  Demerits of Comparative Method

1.      In this method the students remain inactive though reactive to the body-language of the teacher.

2.      All the topics cannot be taught by this method.

3.      This method is not suitable for all classes.

4.      This method requires command over the language and command over body-language.
